Evaluation
Information
At the
Portsmouth Neuropsychology Center, Dr. Rubin
provides comprehensive neuropsychological
evaluations, a specialized approach to
assessing brain/behavior relations. Dr.
Rubin has extensive experience conducting
evaluations with children, adolescents, and
young adults. A neuropsychological
evaluation is appropriate for individuals
who are not meeting developmental
milestones, struggle academically, have
behavioral difficulties, or demonstrate
social problems. Such evaluations are offered
to those who may be challenged with
conditions such as:
• Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD)
• Developmental Delay
• Developmental Dyslexia
• Dyscalculia (Math Disability)
• Language-Based Learning Disorder
• Pervasive Developmental Disorders/Aspergers
Syndrome
• Mental Retardation
• Mood and Anxiety Disorders
• Nonverbal Learning Disorder
• Traumatic Brain Injury
• Congenital Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Evaluations of young children are
appropriate to determine eligibility for
early intervention services. Similarly, as
young children transition from early
intervention programs to school an
evaluation is critical to assess skills and
determine the need for intervention.
Furthermore, Dr. Rubin evaluates young
adults as they transition to college and
provides appropriate recommendations needed
to obtain services.

The Process:
Most evaluations require two to three
sessions. Typically, a session lasts three
hours. The evaluation process is divided
into the following four steps:
1. Step 1: Assess Strengths and
Weaknesses
Dr. Rubin uses a holistic and developmental
approach to develop a through understanding
of the child’s unique strengths and
weaknesses. She gathers background
information by meeting with family members
during an initial interview. Dr. Rubin also
collaborates with physicians, teachers, and
therapists to better understand the child.
To assess a broad array of functions, Dr.
Rubin talks with the child and administers a
series of tests. The following areas are
typically assessed during the evaluation:
• Intelligence
• Academic Achievement
• Memory and Learning
• Language
• Attention and Executive Functions
• Visual Spatial Skills
• Motor Functions
• Emotional and Behavioral Functions
Test results are used to determine an
individual’s strengths and weaknesses in
various domains with the goal of helping
her/him to be more successful in school and
other settings.
2. Step 2: Educate and Increase
Awareness
Dr. Rubin presents clear and detailed
feedback to parents. As appropriate, a
separate feedback session is provided to
children in developmentally appropriate
language. This knowledge offers children
insight into their individual learning
profile. Additionally, parents are provided
with tools to help their children navigate
school and home life.
3. Step 3: Build the Toolbox
Dr. Rubin offers recommendations to maximize
the child’s success both in school and at
home. By utilizing her in-depth knowledge of
the child, she creates a tailored “action
plan” for parents to implement. Parental and
child empowerment results.
4. Step 4: Make Connections
Dr. Rubin is available to attend IEP meetings with
parents and to work with the school team to translate
the results of the evaluation into practical classroom
recommendations. She also works with an extensive
network of professionals, and provides referrals
to pediatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, speech/language
therapists, occupational therapists, psychotherapists,
and advocates.
